Internationally acclaimed as
one of America's master performers on historical keyboard
instruments, Penelope Crawford has appeared as soloist with modern
and period instrument orchestras, and as recitalist and chamber
musician throughout North America. For Musica Omnia she is producing
a series of recordings with the Atlantis Trio & Ensemble, Schubert
song cycles (with Max van Egmond), and late solo sonatas by Schubert
and Beethoven, as well as the Bach harpsichord concertos (with Peter
Watchorn). Additional recordings of solo and chamber music by
Penelope Crawford have appeared on the Loft, Wild Boar, and Titanic
labels.

The Atlantis Trio & Ensemble |
|
|
Robert Schumann’s Piano Quartet, like
its companion work, the Piano Quintet,
was created in 1842, an astonishingly
productive year devoted to chamber
music. A more classically oriented piece
than its sister-work, the quartet
combines transparency with Romantic
passion and emotional intensity. The
CD is completed with the rarely heard
A-Major Trio of Liszt’s rival, Sigismond
Thalberg. The members of the Atlantis
Trio & Ensemble perform both works
with their usual mastery. |

Winterreise, D.911 |

Max van Egmond (baritone) & Penelope Crawford (fortepiano) |
|
|
This is, by general consent, the greatest of all Lieder cycles, and the second that Schubert based on Müller’s poems. Max van Egmond and Penelope Crawford here present a profoundly moving performance, enhanced by the use of an original 1835 fortepiano by the great Viennese maker, Conrad Graf. |

Ludwig van Beethoven |

|
Piano Trio, Op. 1, No. 3; Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36 |
|
|
The Atlantis Trio - Penelope Crawford (fortepiano), Jaap Schröder (violin), Enid Sutherland (cello) |
|
|
Beethoven arrived in Vienna in 1792 to undertake studies with Joseph Haydn. His first published
works were a set of three piano trios, Opus 1, of which the third, in C minor revealed the new
and dramatic aesthetic that Beethoven would further develop during the next thirty-five years
of his residency in Vienna. That trio is presented here along with Beethoven’s own piano trio
arrangement of his Second Symphony in D major, Op. 36 and the Allegretto in B-flat major, WoO
39. The Atlantis Trio provides masterful interpretations on instruments of Beethoven’s period. |

Franz Schubert - Piano Trios, Op. 99 & 100 |

|
The Atlantis Ensemble - Penelope Crawford (fortepiano), Jaap Schröder (violin), Enid Sutherland (cello) |
|
|
Schubert’s two piano trios are among the crowning achievements of early 19th century
chamber music. They date from the final two years of the composer’s short life and
inspired similar compositions for the same ensemble by Mendelssohn and Schumann.
In this newly re-mastered release of their celebrated recording, the Atlantis Trio
provides benchmark performances on instruments of the period. |

Beethoven: The Last Piano Sonatas |
|
|
Penelope Crawford, fortepiano |
|
|
Beethoven’s piano sonatas op. 109-111 represent the composer’s farewell to a genre that was
transformed by his thirty-two contributions to it, culminating in the otherworldly C minor
sonata, op. 111. Fortepianist Penelope Crawford presents these three profound works with
unique insight and sympathy, enhanced by her use of a magnificent original fortepiano,
similar to one owned by Beethoven, by the great Viennese maker, Conrad Graf. |

Complete Music For Two Fortepianos |
|
|
Duo Cristofori: Penelope Crawford and Nancy Garrett, fortepiano |
|
|
Mozart’s output for two separate
fortepianos is limited to a few major
works: the great D major Sonata, K.
448 and the C minor Fugue, K. 426,
composed in the wake of the composer’s
acquaintance with the Bach and Handel
aficionado, Baron Gottfried van
Swieten. Robert Levin’s completion
of the Larghetto & Allegro in E flat
major supplements these works to
provide a complete survey of this
repertoire in exciting performances
by Duo Cristofori. |
